NASA issued a stark warning of an impending threat as an asteroid, equivalent in size to Nelson’s Column, poses a potential collision risk with Earth within the next three years. Designated as 2005 ED224, this celestial menace has earned a place in NASA’s Sentry Earth impact monitoring database, enabling the space agency to monitor asteroids with even the slightest probability of Earth impact.
The asteroid, with an estimated diameter of about 177 feet (54 meters), hurtles through space at an average speed of approximately 61,000 mph (98,300 km/h), following a perilous orbit as a member of the Apollo family of asteroids. Given its trajectory, 2005 ED224 periodically intersects with Earth’s orbit, prompting NASA to identify five potential collision scenarios based on its calculations.
Sentry data reveals that the earliest possible impact date for this asteroid is March 11, 2023. While asteroids of this size typically disintegrate or explode upon entering Earth’s atmosphere, the significant speed of 2005 ED224 raises concerns about its potential to traverse the atmosphere and cause a ground impact. In the event of a collision, the resulting energy release could carve out a crater nearly 1,000 meters wide, posing a severe threat to a sizable area, such as a town or small city.
Despite the anticipated miss in 2023, 2005 ED224 remains a recurring threat, with potential impacts projected for 2028, 2029, 2030, and 2064, as indicated by the Sentry system. The variables influencing an asteroid’s trajectory in space introduce uncertainties that could alter its course over time.
Space experts, including renowned physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, have previously underscored the potential catastrophic consequences of an asteroid collision, emphasizing the importance of continued vigilance and exploration of strategies to mitigate such threats to Earth. The gravity of the situation is accentuated by the potential devastation that could be unleashed if preventive measures are not taken in the face of this celestial peril.
