The Melbourne Cup race marks the end of the horse racing season in Australia. Often referred to as the ‘The Race That Stops A Nation’, it’s the number one betting event of the year. Want to have a go at the Melbourne Cup, but don’t know your horse from your hole in the ground? Check the latest Melbourne Cup odds and try your luck!

The variety of horses present at the Melbourne Cup has many origins. You can find NSW, Victorian, New Zealand and European bred horses running in the race. Horse breeds such as stayers will be contesting in the 3200 m race, but middle distance types will be making their first attempt in such a long event.

Australian racing is not just about the horse – the Melbourne Cup is a spectacular race, attracting 24 of the best stayers from Australia as well as many from overseas. There have been five multi-winners of the Melbourne Cup and only one three-time winner. Makybe Diva, who won in 2003, 2004 and 2005, is the richest horse in Australian racing history with a bankroll of $14 million. She’s also popular among runners.

The 2014-2021 Melbourne Cups were won by five internationally trained horses according to the race history. The most recent was crossed Counter in 2018 who was trained by a man from Newmark-based Godolphin named Charlie Appleby. Twilight Payment, who took first place this year, is another example of an international horse that was trained by Irish trainer Joseph O’Brien.

The defending champion, Twilight Payment finished 11th in the race with 58kg top-weight. Along with Twilight Payment, Spanish Mission also ran in the race, but came in third behind Verry Elleegant and Incentivise.

The Melbourne Cup is one of the finest race spectacles in the world. Finding Melbourne Cup horses that have had success at the distance is key. Melbourne Cup horses come from a series of lead-up races, such as The Moonee Valley Gold Cup, The Caulfield Cup, and The Cox Plate.

One of the most well-known Melbourne Cup horses is Archer, who won in 1861 and 1862. Makybe Diva, a triple champion from 2003-2005, Kingston one of the horses to set the fastest time in 1990 and Prince Of Penzance, the 2015 winner at odds of $101!

The Melbourne Cup is celebrated on the first Tuesday in November, and it’s one of the world’s most famous horse races. It also makes Victoria a holiday state that day.
