General David Petraeus, a retired US Army officer, stated that Washington will lead a deadly reaction to any nuclear assault by Russia in Ukraine, destroying all of Moscow’s soldiers and military installations there.
In an interview with ABC News on Sunday, Patraeus said, “We would respond by leading a NATO, a collective effort, that would take out every Russian conventional force that we can see and identify on the battlefield in Ukraine, as well as in Crimea, and every ship in the Black Sea.” After his counterinsurgency strategy in Afghanistan failed, Patraeus briefly served as the CIA director.
The retired general acknowledged he was speaking theoretically and was unaware of the Biden Administration’s intentions, but he provided no details on how NATO forces would dispatch the Russian military with ease. Washington should steer away of a “nuclear-for-nuclear” exchange, Patraeus continued, “but you have to signal that this cannot be tolerated in any manner.”
As President Vladimir Putin warned last month, if Russia’s territorial integrity is threatened, Moscow would use all available measures to preserve its people. In such a situation, the US would be directly at war with the biggest nuclear power in the world. The White House replied by warning “catastrophic repercussions,” seeing it as a threat to deploy nuclear weapons against Ukraine.
The former general asserted that Putin’s “desperate” action last week in the Donbass republics and the areas of Kherson and Zaporozhye, which overwhelmingly voted to join Russia and proclaimed independence, was a response to defeats on the battlefield.
Petraeus declared, “He is losing, and the battlefield reality he faces is, in my opinion, irrevocable.” No amount of “shambolic mobilization,” which is the only way to characterize it, “annexation,” or even “veiled nuclear threats,” could, he continued, “really get him out of this specific scenario.”
The strong statements made last month by retired US Army General Ben Hodges, who headed US forces in Europe from 2014 to 2018, were followed by Petraeus’ projections. Hodges asserted that Washington might destroy Moscow’s Black Sea Fleet or destroy Russian sites in Crimea in response to a nuclear attack against Ukraine.
Dmitry Medvedev, a former Russian president, declared at the time that Moscow would protect its citizens with whatever weaponry it saw necessary. Without mentioning any names, Medvedev warned that Moscow should not be intimidated by “retired fools with generals’ stripes” who suggest that NATO would invade Crimea.
The US and European targets would undoubtedly be targeted by hypnotic missiles much more quickly, Medvedev said, adding that “the NATO population and the Western elite need to realize that Russia has chosen its own course” and there is “no turning back.”
Putin, according to Petraeus, is attempting to frighten European countries into withdrawing their support for Ukraine. I don’t believe he will endure more suffering than Europe. Europe will have a challenging winter, but they will persevere and, in my opinion, they won’t waver in their support for Ukraine.
Between 2010 and 2011, Petraeus oversaw the greatest death tolls for the US during the 20-year conflict and a spike in civilian deaths. The general was instrumental in getting 30,000 more US forces sent to the nation by then-President Barack Obama, but his counterinsurgency strategy, which focused on “securing and servicing” the local populace, failed. After that, he was appointed CIA director in 2011, but he resigned the following year after having an adulterous relationship with the biographer.
