The Iron Dome, Israel’s advanced rocket defense system, has been a crucial asset in safeguarding the nation against incoming missiles, with a success rate of over 95 percent. In a recent exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Israeli soldiers acknowledged that the system could technically turn the tide in the Ukraine war, given its impressive interception capabilities.

However, there have been hesitations in providing the Iron Dome to Ukraine. According to Jacob Nagel, a former national security adviser, there are several reasons for this reluctance. Firstly, Israel is concerned about the strengthening relationship between Iran and Russia. There is a fear that sending advanced defense systems to Ukraine could result in these weapons falling into the hands of Iranians, potentially escalating tensions in the region.

Nagel emphasized the risk associated with the transfer of weapons during a war, highlighting the inevitability of systems ending up on the opposing side. He argued that the Iron Dome, if sent to Ukraine, could ultimately find its way into Iranian possession. This concern is not exclusive to Israel; Nagel pointed out that the United States faces a similar challenge with their own missile defense systems.

Another factor hindering the deployment of Iron Dome systems to Ukraine is the limited quantity available. Israel does not possess sufficient units to meet Ukraine’s immediate needs, and opening new production lines would take two to three years.

Retired Army Gen. George Joulwan has suggested that Ukraine needs air defenses similar to the Iron Dome to counter Russian attacks effectively. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed shock and frustration over Israel’s reluctance to provide air defenses, emphasizing the urgent need for such systems.

In the face of escalating conflict and destructive strikes on Ukrainian cities by Russia, the debate over providing advanced defense systems to Ukraine continues, with geopolitical considerations and practical limitations playing a significant role in shaping Israel’s response.

  1. Iron dome is only effective against Palestinian home made rockets, it could never work against Russia’s military hardware, and don’t forget, der Israeli chews cannot afford to get on the wrong side of Russia.

  2. $150,000 is not cost effective if the drones Russia uses are $20,000 apiece. Israel has the same problem with Hamas, that uses cheap tube rockets to ineffectively bomb Israeli cities.

A better solution would be to move the infrastructure underground. And in bunkers.
