The Parliament of Slovenia adopted on Tuesday, October 4, an amendment by which it becomes the first ex-communist country in Eastern Europe to legalize the marriage of same-sex couples, as well as adoption, reports AFP.
The modification of family law was voted by 48 deputies, 29 parliamentarians they voted “against” and one abstained.
In July, the highest court ruled that the law defining marriage as the sole union of a man and a woman discriminated against gay and lesbian couples. The articles were effectively suspended and the court ordered Parliament to amend the text within six months.
“With these amendments, we recognize the rights for same-sex couples that they should have had for a long time,” the secretary told them. State minister Simon Maljevac to MPs when he presented the amendment.
The main opposition party, the Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS), criticized the Court’s decision and organized several opposition rallies.
“The best fathers will never replace a mother and vice versa “, said the president of the SDS parliamentary group, Alenka Jeraj, in opening the debates.
Slovenia is the first ex-communist country to ratify this reform in Europe.
Most of its neighbors prohibit civil unions or same-sex marriages. In Hungary, discussions about homosexuality in front of minors are even fined from the summer of 2021.
Slovenia thus joins the 17 countries on the continent that have already legalized same-sex marriage.
