In a gun and knife assault at a children’s facility in northeast Thailand on Thursday, more than 30 people were slain, the majority of them were children, according to local authorities.
The massacre in the Nong Bua Lamphu Province town of Uthai Sawan claimed the lives of 36 persons in total, including 24 children. Police report that the incident harmed at least 12 other people.
The person who opened fire and stabbed individuals inside the building ran away and went to his house, where he killed his family before killing himself.
The culprit has been recognized by Thai law enforcement as a recently retired police officer.
According to local media, the guy may have been under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident and had been fired from the force owing to drug problems.
Around 12.30 pm, when children were taking naps, the shooter entered the children’s facility, according to the authorities.
Before targeting the children, he shot four or five members of the staff, including a teacher who was eight months pregnant, according to district official Jidapa Boonsom, who spoke to Reuters.
People initially believed it to be fireworks, Boonsom continued. The media said that the atrocity had victims as young as two.
Despite the country’s relatively high gun ownership percentage, major shootings are uncommon there.
The most recent incidence of this kind was in 2020 when a soldier who was upset about a real estate deal went on a rampage across four places, killing at least 29 people and injuring 57 more.
