On Saturday night, Evin Prison in Tehran, the capital of Iran, caught fire. Video footage from the time showed smoke and flames billowing from the jail. Widespread, for some weeks now, anti-government protests were taking place when the fire started.
Social media users posted videos of the jail facility on fire while an alarm blared and what appeared to be gunshots were heard. The jail caught fire as there were many loud explosions heard.
According to Al Arabiya and Iran’s IRNA news agency, a fight between detainees and guards caused the fire to start. The Iranian government, however, has not publicly addressed the tragedy or provided any details on victims or facility damage.
A witness informed Reuters that “prisoner families had assembled in front of the main door of Evin prison.” “Fire and smoke are seen. many special forces. Ambulances are also present.
Governments and NGOs in the West have long denounced Evin as housing political detainees. In 2018, Washington placed the facility on its “severe human rights abuses” list, and it is thought that some dual nationals are now incarcerated there serving their sentences. According to Reuters, who cited the man’s lawyer, one of these, an Iranian-American detained on espionage allegations, was sent back to Evin on Wednesday after a brief leave of absence.
In Iran, where anti-government demonstrations have been going on for more than three weeks, a fire broke out. The rioting and calls for the overthrow of the hardline administration of the Islamic Republic spread across the country after the murder of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody in Tehran.
The US and Israel are among the foreign nations that Iranian officials claim are fanning the uprising.
