According to a group of biologists at the University of California, Santa Cruz, the recent finding of a “wonderful specimen” of dodo DNA was the final piece needed to complete the genome of the extinct bird.

The discoveries bring the potential of resurrecting the dodo, which became extinct more than three centuries ago, one step closer.

The Natural History Museum of Denmark will publish the whole genetic sequence, according to Beth Shapiro, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She made this announcement to attendees of a Royal Society webinar.

When prompted by her audience, Shapiro reportedly verified the discovery, according to The Telegraph. “Yes, the full dodo genome has been sequenced because we did it. Although it hasn’t been released yet, it does exist, and we’re still working on it, she added.

The 3 foot tall bird, which formerly lived on the island of Mauritius, was eradicated approximately 500 years ago due to a number of factors such as over-hunting, the inclusion of aggressive foreign animals such as dogs, cats, pigs and rats on the island, a major drought that occurred during that time period and the bird’s inability to sense fear and danger. The bird was so peaceful, that some people think it was actually a DOMESTIC bird long forgot about and not a wild animal.

Shapiro warned the audience at the Royal Society that bringing the dodo back presents particular difficulties.

She claimed that because of cloning—”the same method that was used to generate Dolly the Sheep”—”mammals are simpler.

However, because to the complexity of avian reproductive mechanisms, we are unsure how to achieve it. Therefore, a different strategy for birds is required, she said, adding that she has “little doubt that we will get there.”

Although it wouldn’t be a fully fledged dodo in that scenario, it has been claimed that the dodo’s near relative, the Nicobar pigeon, may have dodo DNA added to it.

So far all of this is just talk, none of the extinct animals have been brought back and we suspect that none of them ever will as they do not have the technology to do such things.

Please wait...
