Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, announced on Friday that she intends to travel to Armenia over the weekend in a show of support for the country, which has been locked in a deadly fight with Azerbaijan. A cease-fire there has been in effect for two days following fighting with neighboring Azerbaijan that claimed more than 200 lives on both sides.
Rep. Jackie Speier, a Democrat from California who is of Armenian origin, will be traveling with Pelosi on Saturday, she informed reporters in Berlin. Pelosi declined to provide further information on the trip, stating that congressional travelers “don’t like to be a target.”
In any case, she declared, “Human rights and honoring the value and dignity of every individual are everything.”
The cease-fire went into force at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, and according to the Armenian Defense Ministry, nothing has broken the cease-fire since then.
Following two days of intense fighting—the worst outbreak of hostilities in over two years—a cease-fire was declared.
The bombardment was attributed to both Armenia and Azerbaijan, with Armenian authorities accusing Baku of unjustified aggression and Azerbaijani authorities claiming that their nation was retaliating for Armenian strikes.
Nikol Pashinyan, the prime minister of Armenia, revised his earlier claim that 105 of his country’s soldiers had perished in battle when speaking in parliament on Friday. The defense ministry of Azerbaijan reported 77 casualties on Friday.
The Azerbaijani soldiers entered Armenian land close to the southern Armenian spa town of Jermuk, according to Edvard Asryan, the head of the General Staff of the Armenian armed forces, who was briefing foreign diplomats in Yerevan.
According to Asryan, Azerbaijani forces also crossed into Armenian land in the vicinity of the villages of Shorja and Nerkin Hand in the provinces of Syunik and Gegharkunik.
He pointed out that the Azerbaijani military are still present there.
