The winds of dissent are swirling within the echelons of Vladimir Putin’s elite troops stationed on the Kherson front, grappling with severe losses in the face of a relentless Ukrainian counteroffensive. Unconfirmed reports hint at a potential tipping point, suggesting Russian forces in Kherson city may be teetering on the brink of surrender.
The Russian President finds himself at the helm of an army reeling from successive blows, particularly evident in the northeast as Kyiv’s forces swiftly advance in the Kharkiv region. The weekend witnessed the recapture of strategic cities – Kupiansk and Izyum – dealt a severe blow to Russian resilience, leaving them seemingly powerless against the Ukrainian onslaught.
Ukraine’s counteroffensive has unfurled over 1,100 square miles of liberated territory on the Kharkiv front, and the momentum shows no signs of abating. Simultaneously, Kyiv’s southern counterattack intensifies, applying unrelenting pressure on Putin’s beleaguered troops.
In a bid to staunch the advance, Russia deployed elite units, including marines and paratroopers, to defend the contested territory. Despite their prowess, these units proved unable to thwart Ukraine’s military from breaching Russian defenses, resulting in substantial casualties that cast a pall over their morale.
One such example is the 810th marine brigade, typically based in Crimea, which suffered an alarming 80 percent loss during recent engagements. The surviving members, grappling with a profound hit to morale, reportedly refuse to rejoin combat duties, exposing the internal fissures within Russian ranks.
Ukraine’s General Staff of the Armed Forces, in a Monday bulletin, highlighted the extent of the losses: “After the successful actions carried out by the Defence Forces in the Kherson direction, the enemy suffered significant losses in manpower. The 810th separate brigade of marines lost almost 85 percent of its personnel. The rest of the servicemen have an extremely low morale and psychological state. They massively refuse to return to the combat zone.”
Amidst the internal turmoil, unverified reports suggest that Russian forces in Kherson are contemplating surrender. This port city holds strategic significance, perched on the Black Sea and the Dnipro River. Its capture could serve as a pivotal platform for Ukraine’s commanders in the broader aim of reclaiming Crimea, a region seized by Russian forces in early March under less contested circumstances. NLwartracker, an OSINT analyst, hinted at this development, tweeting: “Some unconfirmed messages from #Kherson that Russian forces are getting ready to surrender.” The intricacies of this evolving conflict continue to reshape the contours of the ongoing struggle.
