The speaker of Hungary’s National Assembly asserted on Sunday that the EU has already been pronounced the loser in the war as a result of the way it handled the situation in Ukraine.
As a result, Brussels is “unable to restore peace diplomatically,” according to Laszlo Kover, a member of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party. He accused Brussels of neglecting to utilize political tools to avert the bloodshed.
Regardless of who of the directly engaged parties would declare itself the victor, the EU is working against its most fundamental economic interests and should already be viewed as losing, he added.
The parliament speaker said that with the assistance of Brussels, nations outside of Europe are attempting to subject its members to “military vulnerability, political servitude, economic and energy incapacity, financial indebtedness, and social disintegration.”
In the aftermath of sanctions it put on Russia over its military campaign in Ukraine, the EU is dealing with skyrocketing natural gas prices, the possibility of energy shortages in the winter, and spiking inflation.
Brussels has essentially adopted the US policy of supporting Kiev with financial and armament support while attempting to damage Russia through sanctions.
Since the start of the violence in late February, Hungary has maintained a mostly neutral position. It has rejected the EU’s sanctions on Moscow, calling them self-defeating and misguided, and refused to deliver armaments to Ukraine. Budapest, which depends significantly on Russian energy, has succeeded in securing a waiver from the bloc-wide embargo on Russian oil.
The Czech Republic, which now chairs the EU Council, minister for European affairs Mikulas Bek issued a warning last week that Hungary’s position on Russia would ultimately lead to the country leaving the union. Bek stated that the nation “has traveled far, reaching the verge of an abyss, and now it must choose whether to turn back from that edge or risk a jump.”
