Ex-president of Georgia and ex-Governor of Odesa in Ukraine Mikheil Saakashvili, who has been imprisoned since October 2021, begs for the Ukrainian army to intervene in Transnistria, saying that doing so “would restore the territorial integrity of Moldova and provide a precedent for Georgia.”
On Saturday, September 10, Mikheil Saakashvili posted on Facebook that “Moldova’s separatist Russian communist enclave of Transnistria, is one among the next targets.”
He remarks that “the smell of triumph is in the air” following a run of wins by the Ukrainian military in the Russian-controlled Kharkiv area.
The Ukrainian army can take Transnistria in a matter of two to three days, which will restore Moldova’s territorial integrity and provide a precedent for Georgia. By year’s end, Operation Transnistria will be over.
“Transnistria is a wound that is bleeding”
The former president of Georgia further claims that the 14th Army of Russian soldiers, who are stationed in the separatist territory to the left of the Dniester, “massively refuse to renew the contract out of fear of an impending invasion.”
The former chief of state also notes that the 14th Army’s vulnerability would make it easier for Kiev-directed armed troops to intervene.
“Simply put, Ukraine is obligated to secure its borders from this menace. Given the 14th Army’s vulnerability, the operation can be completed in little more than 2 to 3 days with low casualties. I suggest that the government of Moldova immediately begin an impartial discussion with Kiev on restoring the country’s territorial integrity. As former governor of Odesa, I want to suggest that Transnistria is a bleeding wound that urgently requires surgery and that the procedure should not be delayed!” Mikheil Saakashvili declared.
After spending eight years in exile in Ukraine, Saakashvili was detained on his return to Georgia on October 1, 2021. In 2018, he was given a 6 year jail term for misuse of authority. The former leader of Georgia denies the accusations, which he views as political, and has expressed his displeasure by engaging in protracted hunger strikes.
The Russian army was caught off guard by the Ukrainian armed forces’ counteroffensive since the attack was launched in the Kharkiv region’s north while the Russians were getting ready to retaliate for an attack in the Kherson region’s south.
