Amidst the ebb and flow of the ongoing conflict, reports emerged today indicating a significant shift in the geopolitical landscape. Russian forces, after a prolonged and destructive battle for control, have seemingly abandoned the pivotal town of Kreminna, situated merely miles from the strategically crucial city of Severodonetsk.
The capture of Severodonetsk marked a milestone in the intense month-long struggle, leaving much of the city in ruins. The adjoining city of Lysychansk, along with Severodonetsk, stood as the final Ukrainian bastions before the Russian forces secured Luhansk. Telegram channels buzzed with updates, quoting Luhansk Governor Serhiy Haidai’s revelation: “Russian army leaves key town of Kreminna. The city is ‘completely empty,’ and the Ukrainian flag raised by local partisans still flies high.”
Kreminna, a mere 25 kilometers northwest of Severodonetsk, witnessed fierce confrontations during May and June, as Russian forces sought to assert dominance. If these reports hold true, Ukraine now boasts control over territory within Luhansk Oblast, a region previously under complete Russian occupation before a remarkable Ukrainian counteroffensive.
Over the past 24 hours, a video circulating on social media allegedly captured Ukrainian special forces engaging a Russian vehicle near Kreminna. The video’s location remains unverified, emphasizing the complexity of the situation.
Strategically positioned on the same side of the Seversky Donets River, just 15 miles from Severodonetsk, Kreminna’s capture could provide Ukraine with a foothold across the river. Russian forces faced considerable challenges attempting river crossings, frequently enduring shelling.
Governor Haidai outlined the plan for the liberation of Luhansk, stating, “The large-scale de-occupation of Luhansk region will begin from Kreminna and Svatovo.” Svatovo, situated further north in Luhansk, appeared as another focal point for reclaiming territory.
With Russian forces relinquishing the logistics hub of Izyum and crumbling defenses in Kharkiv Oblast, Ukrainian soldiers in the southeast now apply pressure on the Donetsk and Luhansk fronts. This strategic move aligns with Putin’s declared war goal – the capture and potential annexation of the Donbas region, encompassing Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. The tides of conflict continue to shape the destiny of these contested territories.
