Timonovo Belgorod Ukraine

2 Russian villages had to be evacuated this evening as a massive blaze erupted from a Russian ammo stockpile and military site close to the Ukrainian border.

Around 6 PM BST/8 PM local time, the munitions dump, which is close to the town of Timonovo in the Belgorod area of western Russia, caught fire, sending large plumes of smoke and flames into the air.

Later, while a massive flame raged at the military base’s ruins, videos making the rounds on the Telegram messaging app showed an ominous orange glow on the horizon.

The fire broke out a few days after explosions at a Russian airbase in Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula that Moscow has annexed. Russia accused Kyiv of “sabotage” in response to the explosions.

Less than 30 miles from the Ukrainian border, in the Belgorod province, “an munitions storage caught fire near the village of Timonovo,” according to a statement from the area’s governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov.

No casualties were recorded, however, according to him, inhabitants of Soloti and Timonovo were “taken to a safe distance” and officials were looking into the fire’s origin.

It’s unknown if the blasts were triggered by a Ukrainian attack, the Ukrainian government has not yet commented.
