Singapore has introduced a line of beers made from recycled water. This may sound like a joke but it’s not.
A brewery in Singapore has taken the green message to another level. They have turned urine and feces into alcoholic beverages.
It doesn’t matter if it sounds appealing or not, but in an effort to make alcoholic beverages eco-friendly, this is what Singapore is doing.
Currently the product has been advertised as the ‘Most Eco Green Beer’, under the brand name ‘NEWBrew’ made from recycled liquid from waste.
Why did Singapore start using urine and feces to make beer? This is allegedly due to the increasing water crisis around the world, Singapore also takes its role in preserving the earth by drinking recycled sewage water.
Since Beer requires a lot of water and 90 percent of the ingredient is H20, for that Singapore has launched the drink to raise awareness about the country’s water scarcity.
NEWBrew is made from NEWater, recycled from waste which also contains various human wastes such as urine, but of course it is then filtered and treated in such a way and pumped into Singapore’s water supply. Before the waste is turned into NEWater, it goes through rigorous testing and several rounds of screening to ensure it’s safe to drink.
The waste is treated to “very clean” water before it is used to make 95 percent of Tropical Blonde Ale Beer. NEWBrew was launched last month by national water agency PUB and local brewery Brewerkz, in conjunction with Singapore International Water Week (SIWW). The clean NEWater does not contaminate the malt, hops and yeast flavors in the drink.
Water bodies in Singapore have been treating wastewater for years to make it potable.
Singapore’s specialty brews have been described as having a “toasted, honey-like aftertaste” created while ensuring Singapore’s water supply is safe.
According to Singapore’s water agency, recycled wastewater can now meet 40 percent of Singapore’s water demand, a figure expected to increase to 55 percent by 2060.
This is not the first beer in the world made out of urine and recycled waste but it is the first in Singapore.
