For half a century, women throughout the United States have had the legal right to have an abortion, but now the Supreme Court is about to abolish that right, Politico reported.
In the much-publicized “Roe v Wade” case, the US Supreme Court ruled in 1973 that the right to abortion was a constitutionally protected right throughout the United States.
But according to a leaked draft decision published by Politico, a majority of the members of the court have now come to the conclusion that the practice decision from 1973 is incorrect and should be torn up. The judgment in the case “Planned Parenthood v Casey”, which upheld this practice, also wants Supreme Court ruling revoked.
This would mean that the federal abortion law would disappear and it would be up to the individual states to decide whether abortion should be legal at all.
It is expected that about half of the US states may take advantage of the possibility of banning abortion.
The US Supreme Court which since the Trump administration’s appointments has a clear conservative majority, is expected to make its official decision on the issue in late June or early July.
