Israel strongly condemns Sergey Lavrov after the Russian Foreign Minister said that Adolf Hitler was of “Jewish descent” and that “the Jews themselves are the greatest anti-Semites.”
It was in an interview in the Italian media on Sunday that Sergey Lavrov was asked how Russia can claim that Ukraine needs to be “de-Nazified” when President Volodymyr Zelensky is a Jew.
“So what if Zelenskyy is Jewish? The fact does not negate the Nazi elements in Ukraine. I believe that Hitler also had Jewish blood. It means absolutely nothing. The wise Jewish people said that the most ardent antisemites are usually Jews.” Lavrov replied according to Haaretz.
In the interview, Lavrov also accuses the United States and Canada of having trained “openly neo-Nazi” forces such as the Azov Battalion, which today is subordinate to Ukraine’s Defense Ministry. The Canadian training effort that he is referring to also included Swedish officers.
But Sergei Lavrov’s proposal about Hitler does not go home to Israel – as one might have expected.
I take very seriously the statement of the Russian Foreign Minister. His words are untrue and what they mean is wrong. The goal of such lies is to accuse the Jews themselves of the most horrific crimes in history, which were committed against them, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said.
Foreign Minister Yair Lapid calls Lavrov’s comments “unforgivable” and “scandalous”, according to Reuters.
Israel has also summoned Russia’s ambassador to a “tough conversation” because of what happened, according to Reuters.
