After the bloody attack on the Notre-Dame basilica, Nice and the Church were again hard hit this Sunday, shortly before a service.
A man qualified by the mayor Christian Estrosi as “unbalanced” savagely attacked Father Kristof with a knife in the Saint-Pierre-d’Arène church, located rue de la Buffa.
The father was stabbed twenty times. A nun, Sister Marie-Claude, tried to disarm the assailant. She was injured in the hand.
The firefighters and the Samu provided them with first aid. Both victims were transported conscious to hospital. Their days were not threatened.
The deputy (LR) of the Alpes-Maritimes Eric Ciotti, who went there quickly and was able to speak with the victims, wanted to be reassuring. “Father Kristof is conscious. He is a solid and lucid man just like the nun. The emotion is obviously very great among the parishioners.”
The security system put in place during the masses seems to have worked since municipal and national police officers very quickly intervened to arrest the individual, Kévin R., immediately placed in police custody.
A police source collected by Nice-Matin recounts the arrest of the suspect, barely minutes after the fact, by national and municipal police officers. “The suspect ran away. Witnesses were leading the police. The assailant exited the entrance, walked around the church, chased by the crews, then re-entered the church from behind. The officers then made the summons. The suspect finally threw the knife on the ground, knelt down and was arrested.”
According to a police source quoted by AFP, the attacker “spontaneously told the police that he was of the Jewish faith and that on this election day he wanted to kill Macron and that he had finally fell back on a church” .
“The man, of French nationality, was born in 1991 in Fréjus” , specified the prefect Bernard Gonzalez. Unknown to the police, Kévin R. “has made several stays in psychiatry at Sainte-Marie hospital” , further indicated the representative of the State in the department.
“We can perhaps think of a premeditated act since the individual would have bought his knife a few days ago”, added the mayor.
According to Christian Estrosi, the father of the suspect went there as soon as he learned the facts in order to make himself available to the investigators. “His father, when he learned what had just happened, immediately went there to make himself available to the investigators. And confirm a number of things about his psychiatric follow-up, said the first magistrate.
The public prosecutor Xavier Bonhomme added that an investigation for attempted murder and violence with a weapon was open. “He is a person on the judicial level who was not known, who has no antecedent” , indicated the magistrate, specifying that the weapon, a knife with a blade of about ten centimeters, had been seized. “The motives for the passage are difficult to establish. The investigation has been entrusted to the judicial police and the national anti-terrorist prosecutor’s office has been informed.”
A dozen parishioners, who witnessed the attack, were taken care of by a psychological cell in an annex of the church.
