Two decades after former president Mugabe has destroyed Zimbabwe’s economy by encouraging black farmers to violently force white commercial farmers off their land, his successor is now throwing in the towel.
The land grabs, which began in 2000, were supported by Mugabe’s government “because it needed to correct colonial imbalances”.
Nearly 4,500 white-owned properties and others protected by government-to-government contracts were involved in the land grabs.
According to Bloomberg, Mnangagwa’s government suggested that all claims of these farmers be settled by offering them land in the country.
“The purpose of these regulations is to provide for the provision of land to people who are entitled to compensation,” Land Affairs Minister Perence Shiri said on Friday.
Zimbabwe has budgeted $21 million this year for compensation to eligible farmers.
Zimbabwe was once one of the richest countries in Africa, it has now become one of the continent’s poorest countries.
“We welcome the development, as we believe there is enough land waiting to be used,” a spokesperson from the South African Embassy said by phone from Harare, CGTN Africa reported
Many of the farms that fell under the so-called bilateral investment protection agreement belonged to countries such as Britain, South Africa, Australia, the Netherlands and Denmark.
