Spanish authorities early this week announced the arrests of 26 suspected people smugglers who are believed to have brought in over 900 illegal migrants from Algeria to Spain last year, earning at least 1.5 million euros in the process.
Police conducted a series of raids across Almeria and Alicante on Monday which led to the arrests of 26 of the suspected people smugglers and the confiscation of 17 vehicles. The network of smugglers spanned from Algeria to southeastern Spain, The Local reports.
The network of smugglers, whose nationalities have not been released by police, are believed to have used high powered speedboats to charter mainly Algerian migrants from the port of Oran, in Algeria, to Spain. The group is said to have charged close to 2,500 euros per illegal migrant smuggled.
According to the Spanish police, if the migrants were unable to pay the full amount, they would be dumped along the way or taken as a hostage until their families could come up with the money.
In 2019, the number of migrant arrivals in Spain, which totaled 32,513, marked a considerable drop from the previous year which saw 65,283 invaders make it to Spanish territory, according to the U.N. Most of those migrants were Algerian, Moroccan, and Guinean nationals.
The drop in new arrivals can be attributed to increased coordination between Moroccan and Spanish border authorities.
But while the flow of North African migrants coming into Spain seems to be relenting slightly, the same cannot be said for other southern European countries like Italy, as its globalist-led government continues to invite scores of new migrants into their already struggling country.
Over the weekend, Italy’s leftist government allowed the NGO migrant transport vessel “Open Arms” to disembark another 365 invaders at the Sicilian port of Pozzallo. Italian media reported that the newly arrived invaders would be distributed across the European Union, as per the EU agreement.
