Spain’s national populist Vox party – a party that had only entered Parliament for the first time last spring – saw its number of lawmakers double yesterday in the country’s fourth national election in just four years, making it the country’s third-largest party.

The Socialist party, led by acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who believed that that snap election would strengthen his party’s position in government, finished in first place, but with fewer seats than they captured in last spring’s election.

The far-left Unidas Podemos – the Socialists’ main ally in Spanish parliament – lost even more seats than its former senior coalition partner.

The center-right People’s Party which led the country before Sanchez and the Socialists also saw sizeable gains yesterday, while the voting base of the europhile, centrist Citizen’s party all but vanished.

Sunday’s electoral outcome indicates there will be no end in sight to the current stalemate between the left and right wings in Spain, suggesting that it could be weeks or even months before a new government is formed.

Matteo Salvini, Italy’s preeminent populist, and the country’s former interior minister hailed the “great advances’ by his ‘friends’ in Vox, but rightly anticipated the hateful reactions by the mainstream media and establishment politicians.

Following the announcement of the election’s results, Salvini took to Twitter, writing: “I bet there are already ready-made titles of news and newspapers on ‘extreme right-wing victory, racists, sovereigntists, fascists.”

“Not at all racist and fascist. In Italy as in Spain we just want to live peacefully in our own home,” Salvini added.
