A new poll has revealed that the national populist Sweden Democrats are the most popular party in the country, with nearly one in four voters saying that they would cast their ballot for the party if elections were held today.

The survey, conducted by Swedish polling company Demoskop, showed the right-wing populist party polling just under a quarter of Swedish voters, at 24.2 percent. This, compared to 22.2 percent for the ruling Social Democrats, who in 2018 had their worst electoral performance ever, garnering just 28 percent of the vote, Swedish daily tabloid Aftonbladet reports.

The news comes nine years after the Sweden Democrats first entered the Riksdag, Sweden’s parliament.

“I’m not surprised,” Jimmie Åkesson, the leader of the Sweden Democrats, told the newspaper.

For Åkesson, the news marks the end of the political hegemony that the Social Democrats – the party who inaugurated Sweden’s suicidal, pro-mass migration policy – enjoyed since the 1930s.

Åkesson added that the poll’s results cemented his party as the true opposition to the ruling Social Democrat party.

“I have long argued that we would become the biggest party sooner or later. Over the years, we have consistently talked about gang crime, escalating insecurity, migration policy that has not worked, and integration policy that has made the situation worse. More and more people are experiencing these problems in their everyday lives and can relate to them. Then we become a credible alternative,” Åkesson explained.

Party secretary for the Social Democrats, Lena Rådström Baastad, blamed the party’s record losses on the recent spate of explosions and deadly shootings in Swedish cities.

“It’s a damn tough situation right now, so I’m not surprised when you consider what we’ve got against us, with gang murders, shootings, and explosions. It’s us, as the ruling party, who has to pay the price,” Baastad explained.

But even if the Sweden Democrats emerge as the largest party in the 2022 general election, whether they will enter government remains to be seen. Much like other right-wing populist parties throughout Europe, other so-called ‘conservative’ parties have refused to work with the Sweden Democrats in the past.
