Two Italian police officers have been shot dead at police headquarters in Trieste after a detained robbery suspect managed to steal one of their firearms and opened fire on Friday afternoon.
The suspect, a Dominican migrant who has been described as having ‘psychiatric problems’, is said to have asked to use the bathroom before he grabbed a police officer’s gun and shot him and another officer at point-blank range, the Daily Mail reports.
As a result of the shootout, two police officers – Pierluigi Rotta, 34, and Matteo Demenego, 31 – died at the hospital because of their injuries, while three other officers were injured. One of the two robbers was also injured.
Rotta, from Pozzuoli but originally from Naples, had served with the force in Trieste since June 2016, while Demenego was assigned to Trieste’s police department in September of 2013. Demenego had just celebrated his birthday a week earlier.
The robbers – two brothers, aged 29 and 32 – were initially able to escape following the shootout, but were apprehended by police shortly after.
The Mayor of Trieste, Orlando Pocci, described the attack as a “tragedy which leaves our community speechless”.
In a tweet, the State Police wrote: ‘Police Chief Gabrielli and Interior Minister Lamorgese are reaching Trieste to support families of Pierluigi and Matteo and expressing sympathy to the women and men of the police headquarters in Via Tor Bandena and to all of Trieste.’
The shooting comes just days after a stabbing rampage at police headquarters in Paris which saw a disgruntled employee and Islamic convert stab four police officers to death.
