Following an attempted robbery at a Co-op store in Birmingham on Thursday, six people, including two children, have been treated for exposure to an unknown chemical substance.
Just before 2:30 pm emergency services were called out to respond to an incident which occurred at the supermarket in the Northfield area in Birmingham. Paramedics said the victims are in a stable condition.
According to police, two individuals were attempting to shoplift items from the store when staff members confronted them. The pair then threw some kind of chemical substance in the direction of the staff members, the Daily Mail reports.
Police, emergency medical services, and the Hazardous Area Response Team gathered with a spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service who said, “We’re currently treating six patients — two children and four adults. They’ve all been exposed to an unknown substance. All are said to be in a stable condition.”
The Daily Mail reported that witnesses said they heard children screaming after the suspected acid attack occurred.
One woman who witnessed the incident said, “It all happened around 2.30pm. The shop was robbed and a chemical substance was thrown. Someone is in the ambulance after they breathed in the substance and were coughing.”
The incident follows another suspected acid attack which occurred on Sunday in Stourbridge, a city of 60,000, about 13 miles from Birmingham. Two men suffered chemical burn injuries after an assailant threw an unknown substance on them while they were sitting in a van not far from a popular children’s party venue.
Last week, a report obtained by the Evening Standard revealed that the number of acid attacks in London are at record levels, having increased over tenfold in just six years. Sadly, young people are often the victims.
