Greek police have arrested ten Syrian migrants who were disguised as Ukrainian volleyball players.

The group, who all wore matching tracksuits, was arrested at Athens’ Eleftherios Venizelos airport after borders and customs officials discovered that they were using Ukrainian passports that were clearly not their own, and had been reported lost or stolen.

According to police, the group had hoped to eventually make it to Zurich, Switzerland where they had planned to claim asylum, The Sun reports.

Upon briefly questioning the group of men, police were quickly able to determine that were not members of a Ukrainian volleyball team. Shortly after, police detained the group and sent them an investigating magistrate where they’ll face charges of attempting to illegally enter a country with stolen lost travel documents.

Recently, Greece has become the primary gateway for Middle Eastern migrants who are trying to make their way to other European countries.

In August, Greece saw close to 7,000 migrants arrive by boat, the highest number since 2016.

According to the latest official figures, there are more than 26,600 asylum seekers currently in overcrowded camps on Lesbos, Chios, and Samos, the Greek islands at the forefront of the migrant influx.

Due to the overcrowding and deteriorating conditions, Greece has started to move hundreds of ‘asylum seekers’ from Moria on the Greek island of Lesbos to its mainland.

The number of illegal migrant arrivals, which once averaged 60 per day, has now reached an average of 278 per day.
