Sweden’s national bomb squad was called to a preschool in central Kristianstad after a teacher discovered that one of their students had brought a hand grenade to school.

After the bomb squad arrived, the preschool was quickly put on lockdown, a large barricade was set up, and a controlled detonation of the grenade was safely carried out in the schoolyard, SVT reports.

“These are extremely dangerous things. If it had exploded when the children were around it, it could have gone really badly,” officer Thomas Söderberg told Expressen. “The child in question probably thought it looked cool and wanted to show it off. As I understand it, the parents didn’t know that they had the grenade at home,” Söderberg added.

According to the police, the child must have found the grenade at the military firing range in Rinkaby during the summer and brought it home. When summer break was over, the child wanted to bring it to kindergarten to show off to their friends.

“The grenade probably had been there for a while before the child found it. The military must have missed it,” said Söderberg.

“He had put it up on a ping-pong table. A member of staff came in and almost had a heart attack,” Söderberg explained.

Incidents involving hand grenades are on the rise in Europe.

A few weeks ago, Voice of Europe reported that the number of incidents involving hand grenades has exploded during the last year in the Netherlands.

The problem has gotten so bad that Amsterdam police have been forced to put together a special task force whose sole purpose is to deal with the growing problem.
