According to a new poll, Italy’s former interior minister Matteo Salvini is now the country’s most trusted politician.

The leader of the national populist League party received a 40 percent trust rating in the poll, just edging out Italy’s sitting Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, who received 39 percent.

The poll also revealed that 48 percent of respondents said that they little to no confidence in the globalist coalition government between Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement, Italy’s Giornale reports.

Giorgia Meloni, the leader of national-conservative Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, was trusted by 29 percent of respondents, edging out the Fiver Star Movement’s leader Luigi Di Maio, who was trusted by 28 percent of those who were polled.

Like Matteo Salvini, Meloni has also denounced the new globalist coalition as anti-democratic and has called for new elections.

During a recent rally held in Rome where national populist supporters gathered to protest the new government, Meloni said, “They know they are doing something the Italians don’t want and because they know they can’t win a free competition in the elections, they steal it. They are thieves of democracy, thieves of sovereignty, thieves.”

Nicola Zingaretti, the leader of the leftist establishment Democratic Party, fared the worst in poll numbers, with just 23 percent respondents saying that they trusted him. This isn’t particularly surprising since the PD leader was at the forefront of reopening Italy’s ports to NGO migrant ferries operating in the Mediterranean sea – something that the vast majority of Italians did not want to see happen.

A recent IPSOS poll revealed that just 34 percent of Italians approve of the leftist establishment coalition between M5S and PD.
