A newly released poll has revealed that an overwhelming majority of Italians do not approve of the new Democratic Party-Five Star Movement coalition, while a substantial portion of the population prefers the former populist coalition government led by Matteo Salvini.
According to an IPSOS poll, 54 percent of Italian citizens who were surveyed reported not liking the newly formed PD-M5S coalition government led by PM Giuseppe Conte, with just 34 percent saying that they approved of it, daily newspaper Il Giornale reports.
Those surveyed were also asked whether they preferred the former populist Lega-Five Star Movement (M5S) coalition or the newly formed coalition government. While thirty-two percent of respondents said that they preferred the new coalition, thirty-six percent said they preferred the former government. Another thirty-two percent of respondents said they were not sure.
45 percent of survey respondents also said that they believed that Salvini’s decision to collapse the Lega-M5S coalition was a bad idea, while just 1/3 of respondents said that it was a good move.
The lack of popular support enjoyed by the newly formed coalition likely has to do with Democratic Party leader Nicola Zingaretti’s stated intention to reopen Italy’s ports to NGO human trafficking ferries.
Zingarett’s feelings towards the facilitation of mass migration into Italy by migrant transport NGOs have been made clear. In the past, he has said that he would overturn the migration and security decrees enacted by Salvini which seek to prevent human trafficking operations made possible by these NGOs.
Earlier this week, Democratic Party President Matteo Orfini insisted that PM Conte re-open Italy’s ports to allow the Ocean Viking, which is operated by the SOS Mediterranée and Doctors Without Borders NGOs, to dock and offload migrants.
At least 84 migrants are currently onboard the Ocean Viking. The ship has requested to dock in Malta and Italy.
