According to Swedish police, the number of incidents involving explosives and bombs between January to July of 2019 has risen 45 percent compared to the same period in 2018.

Newly released police statistics have revealed that Sweden experienced a total of 83 explosive incidents between January to July of 2018, a number which rose to 120 this year, Dagens Nyheter reports.

Different groups in Sweden have reported different numbers regarding the number of explosions.

For example, Dagens Nyheter reported that last year Sweden saw at least 157 explosions. However, the exact numbers are still unclear. The Crime Prevention Council (BRÅ) reported 108 incidents of general destruction caused by explosions in the same year.

On the other hand, the National Forensic Center (NFC) – another organization that keeps track of explosive incidents – says the number of cases in 2018 totaled 255, with 196 occuring so far this year. Year by year, NFC statistics demonstrate a persistent increase with a mere 93 incidents happening in 2013.

Despite the precise numbers differing from organization to organization, all of the organizations keeping a tally agree that this year has seen substantially more bombings and explosions than previous years.

When commenting on the increase in explosions, criminologist Sven Granath had this to say: “Yes, unfortunately, it has increased. Why we do not know, this may be due to the increase in gun violence at the national level. In individual locations, there may be one or more conflicts between criminal networks, but it is very difficult to know.”

Police have said that the kinds of explosives being used have changed over the years, with hand grenades being used more often in prior years. However, these days they say that explosives like dynamite were becoming increasingly common.

The number of cases involving explosions in the migrant rich city of Malmö have been especially high in the last few years. In 2017, there were 58 cases, last year there were 45, and thus far in 2019, there have been 23.

In June of this year, Malmö saw three explosions in just 24 hours.
