Justin Schembri, a local councilor from Malta, has applauded Italy’s populist Interior Minister Matteo Salvini for opposing the European Union’s pro-mass migration policies, and for not allowing “his country to be accomplices” in the “wave of organized crime” that’s taking place on the Mediterranean Sea.

Schembri referenced a screenshot of an article where Salvini reiterated the promise that as long as he is a minister in the Italian government, no one would enter the country without permission. Schembri went on to say that he hoped that Maltese leaders would follow Salvini’s lead.

“That you have a politician ready to put his foot down and defend what he believes in is something to be appreciated,” Schembri wrote in a post on his personal Facebook profile.

“In the past, our country’s great leaders also put their feet down and defended Malta in accordance to what they believed in, and that’s how it should be,” he continued.

Schembri – a member of Malta’s Nationalist Party – stated that regardless of the labels Salvini has been branded with, and despite the emotional outcry against him, Salvini is acting as all politicians should act.

“Maybe many stamp Salvini with the term ‘racist,’ but he is likely a sensible person because he wants to stop this planned trafficking, an at the same time not let his country be accomplices in this wave of organized crime,” Schembri argued.

He went on to say, “I do not agree with Salvini on a lot of things, including that his country has a crisis of a serious lack of work, so much so that many Italians are going looking [for jobs]in other countries, including Malta, but one must admire that he is capable of standing up to the European Union and his Prime Minister.”

Schembri says unlike Maltese and EU politicians where no one seems to have the “guts” to put their foot down and put a stop to mass migration, Salvini has truly listened to the concerns of the Italian people on mass immigration, and is now taking action to put a stop to it.

“Today’s politicians have the obligation to defend what belongs to our children and they are failing us all the time because they are not listening to the call of the people.”
