One of the European Union’s primary issues is that not all of its member states contribute equally. This was one of the main factors which led Brits to leave the Union in 2016.

The question of which member states are paying more in EU contributions than they’re getting out has and will remain to be a contentious issue in the bloc.

The 2017 EU budget revealed that, in terms of direct monetary contributions, there were ten member states which were contributing more than they were getting from the EU.

Statistica noted that the United Kingdom ranked second in terms of net contributions, with roughly 7.5 million euros. Germany topped the list of net contributors, putting in 12.8 billion more euros than they received. France, Italy, and the Netherlands came in third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.

By far, Poland was the largest monetary benefactor from the European Union, receiving 8.2 billion more euros than it put in. Greece came in second with +3.7 billion euros, Romania in third with +3.4 billion euros, and Hungary in fourth with +3.1 billion euros.

Interestingly enough, however, being at the top of the list of net contributors hasn’t caused every country to turn its back on the bloc. Support for the European project remains quite high in Germany.

A study conducted by the Bertelsmann foundation revealed that although budget contributions could outweigh direct financial benefits for the country, the single EU market has raised the average German income by over 1,000 euros in comparison to the EU average increase of 840 euros.
