According to data released from a study carried out by Gesellschaft für Deutsche Sprache (Society for the German Language), the number one name for newborn baby boys in Berlin is Mohammed.
Over one million Middle Eastern and North African migrants – many with Islamic backgrounds – have entered Germany since Angela Merkel flung the country’s doors open in 2015.
After all of the different variations of the name – such as different spellings such as Muhammed and variants like Mehmet – are counted together, Mohammed ends up ranking as the most popular name for baby boys in the German capital, the German tabloid Bild reports.
But it’s not only in Berlin where this trend is visible.
The Society for German Language also revealed that the name was in the ten most popular boy names in six of country’s 16 states.
The name has also become quite popular in the city of Bremen, where it’s the third most popular name for a newborn boy. The cities of Hamburg, Hesse, Saarland, and North Rhine-Westphalia also featured the name Mohammed at the top of their lists for the most common boy names in the 2018 figures.
Andrea Ewels, the managing director at the Society for German Language, has previously stated that the rise of the name Mohammad was ‘of course related to the wave of immigration’.
Across the whole of Germany, however, the top five most popular names for boys were Ben, Elias, Maximillian, Alexander, and Paul.
Emma topped of the list for girls, followed by Hannah, Mia, Sophia, and Emilia.
Although it hasn’t yet managed to break into the ten most common names nationwide, the name Mohammed has – within just one decade – dramatically risen, according to a 2017 report by the Society for German Language which showed the name going from the 97th to the 24th most popular baby name.
Other countries in Europe that have seen recent waves of mass migration show similar changes, such as neighboring Austria — where Mohammed was the 3rd most popular boy’s name in 2017.
According to data released by the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) in September of 2018, the name Mohammed was shown to be the most popular newborn baby boy’s name in suburbs of Paris which are densely populated with migrants.
In the U.K., statistics released by the government have also revealed that – for six years straight now – Mohammed has been the most popular name England and Wales.
