This must be the story of the year by far! Most of the media didn’t include everything in one single article but after a little digging we managed to compile everything in place for you guys.
An Italian man from Venice named Matteo Politi was arrested in Romania after finally being caught and exposed as a CON artist who posed as a “renowned British surgeon” when in fact back home in Italy he was just a valet boy (parking) who didn’t even finish secondary school and is a high-school drop out, let alone university medical studies…
Despite having only 8 years of school study the man was ingenious enough to come up with a very elaborate scheme which helped him earn lots of money in Romania and live a lavish lifestyle.
Romanian health authorities announced that Politi was issued with a doctor’s permit in March last year after submitting a forged diploma claiming he qualified as one in Pristina, Kosovo.
The man posed as “renowned British surgeon” under a fake name, Matthew Mode with experience in the UK, Spain, Italy.
Polti used forged documents and created a CV which said he had studied at the UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside Hospital and the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in United States.
Now here’s the funny part, Politi started this whole stuff in Italy back in 2011, he even tricked a centre for trainee plastic surgeons in the Italian city of Verona to allow him to give lectures. The Italian authorities finally caught him up but they let him go unpunished.
The Italian national was reportedly convicted of identity theft in his home country in 2011 before allegedly moving to Romania, where he posed as a British plastic surgeon. Italian media reported that Politi was spared jail in 2011 for a similar fraud.

He then continued his practices in the UK as well, now a UK woman has told how he gave her lip jabs after conning her with snaps of him in op theatres. Personal trainer Melek Stevens, 39, who met him at a London gym, said yesterday: “He spent half an hour giving me injections in my home.
“He left with £200, saying my looks would improve dramatically. But it made no difference.
“I never saw him again. I feel a fool. I’m sure I’m not the only one he worked on in London.
“I’m lucky I didn’t get an infection that could have ruined my looks or even killed me. He deserves punishment.”
UK authorities are now also investigating this case as the Italian is feared to have worked in the UK under the same false name Matthew Mode as well. A LinkedIn profile claims he ran a clinic. Checks show he lived in Stratford, East London, in late 2017.
The UK Care Quality Commission, which regulates the UK industry, will probe and pass details to the General Medical Council.
According to Romanian tabloid Libertatea he has performed 10 operations at four private hospitals in the Romanian capital Bucharest, named as Euromedical, Prestige, MH Medical Group, and Monza, before being caught out.
Reports state Politi aroused suspicion when nurses spotted that he was struggling to put his medical gloves on and he failed to wash his hands correctly before an operation.
Romanian colleague Adina Alberts raised concerns about Politi’s credentials after he appeared not to follow the proper procedures for washing his hands prior to surgery and did not seem to hold a syringe correctly. She added that one of his patients also went on to suffer complications from breast surgery.
The Italian conman gathered some medical knowledge from watching YouTube videos which wasn’t enough obviously.
The Romanian Doctors’ College was called and notified about “Matthew Mode” which they begun an investigation alongside with the police.
Matteo Politi was seized at the Romanian border check as he was trying to flee to Hungary by train. He is now in Bucharest under arrest, expecting trial.
Jesus Christ, what a complex crazy story! This guy must have been an avid fan of the smartphone game Amateur Surgeon!
