A Dutch woman has received a relatively lengthy sentence for defending a Dutch tradition for children, newspaper De Telegraaf reports.

The tradition of Saint Nicholas is extremely popular in the Netherlands and somewhat equals Santa Claus. Saint Nicholas and his assistants also give presents to children moving from chimney to chimney.

But after a handful of people began protesting and receiving massive mainstream media attention, the tradition has become controversial for left-wing extremists and black identity groups.

They see the assistants of Saint Nicholas, the black Petes, as racist, because they use black make-up to portray chimney soot. For the past five years the controversy has become problematic as identity groups and leftist extremists threaten to use violence.

Last year Saint Nicholas was officially to arrive in the Frisian town of Dokkum and the labour mayor of the town thought it was acceptable to invite several extremist action groups to the children’s feast.

A woman named Jenny Douwes, decided to organise a protest to block the groups to give the children a safe feast. But after the police contacted her she immediately aborted her action.

But despite Jenny’s pull back, her earlier call resulted in 34 people peacefully blocking the highway to Dokkum and with it the bus of black identity groups.

Douwes, who’s seen as the initiator received six-weeks of community service for sedition and obstructing the right to protest. She also received a one month suspended sentence.

Compared with other court decisions Jenny’s sentence is extreme and the process has even been called a ‘political process’ to appease the far left and black identity groups.

Lesser or similar sentences were given for: Participating in a terrorist organisation, paedophilia and extreme violence.

But Jenny and the group have received a lot of support from the Dutch people for their ‘brave actions’ to defend the Dutch tradition.

Crowdfund initiatives have brought in tens of thousands of euros for the trials and some even label Jenny “Jenny D’arc”, named after the French female hero Joan of Arc.
