Twenty-Eighteen just hasn’t been his year. The beleaguered and most unpopular of French Presidents in recent times, Emmanuel Macron, admitted on Saturday that France is in a “moral crisis”.

Macron implicitly refers to the “Yellow Vest” or “Hi Viz” protestors across the country who are protesting in the streets against rising fuel taxes and calling for Macron to resign.

Those high visibility vests all French motorists must carry in their cars have come in rather useful for the protestors, as this week has been an especially difficult one for the President, who seems if anything to be trying to punch through the bottom of the barrel.

Their grievance is born out of the fuel tax hikes, which have increased seven euro cents per litre and this will continue to increase in the next years according to Transport Minister Elisabeth Borne, with the tax on petrol increasing four euro cents.

At present, petrol is roughly €1.64 a litre in Paris, marginally more than diesel. But on Saturday speaking at a question-and-answer session with France’s mayors, President Macron declined to refer to the “Yellow Jackets” by name only referring to the “demagogic fashion” in which the protesters were opposing the fuel tax hikes referring to it as confirmation that France is in a “moral crisis”.

“It’s a little bit unfair. They see my face when they fill up at the petrol pump.” Macron whinged during the annual convention. “There is a moral crisis in society, “The risk is in the ambient demagogy. I’m hearing the anger. But I don’t want to hear it in a demagogic fashion.

“The challenge that is ours is to invent a new grammar”. At the same time, thousands of police have been deployed for the eighth day of the people’s “demagogic” demonstrations throughout France and even into Belgium.
