Public health watchdog THL says that there is a significant risk for girls in Finland to be subjected to genital mutilation.
THL data shows that more than 10,000 girls and women living in Finland have already undergone the barbaric procedure.
“In addition there are another estimated 650 to 3,000 girls living in Finland who are at risk of [genital mutilation] circumcision,” THL specialist Mimmi Koukkula says.
Koukkula claims that officials think FGM is not carried out in Finland, but girls are sent abroad for it.
According to the World Health Organisation young girls under 15 years of age are the highest risk group. The procedure is mostly carried out among migrants from Somalia, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Kurdish regions.
