france diesel protests 2018

Today one million French working class people are blocking roads and are protesting against the increase of the price of Diesel, which is the most commonly used fuel in French cars, because of its cheap price, which is not so cheap anymore.

Over the past 12 months Macron’s government increased its price by 20 per cent by taxing it more and more to combat climate change and pollution. Their goal is to encourage people to move away from fossil fuels in general.

The government wants to go even further with the tax increase. The people most hit by these measures are the people living in non-urban areas, outside the cities in the countryside.

But what started as a simple protest is turning into a quasi-revolutionary movement. The people of the movement, who are called the yellow vests are even supported by some police officers and army members.

But why does the French government more income via taxes? Our reporter Abdelhamid Kaddour tells you more about it.
