Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt sensationally compared the EU to the Soviet Union as he attacked Brussels’ hardline stance over Brexit.
Mr Hunt, who campaigned for Remain in the 2016 referendum, made the remark as he addressed the annual Tory conference in Birmingham.
He told Conservative delegates: “What happened to the confidence and ideals of the European dream? “The EU was set up to protect freedom. It was the Soviet Union that stopped people leaving. “The lesson from history is clear: if you turn the EU club into a prison, the desire to get out won’t diminish it will grow.”
Mr Hunt also defended Brexit voters as he echoed Margaret Thatcher’s iconic ‘No, no, no’ diatribe against the EU in 1990. He said: “Our friends in Europe need to understand that 52 percent of the country’s aren’t rapid populists trying to build Fortress Britain.
