The populist Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party is now Germany’s second largest party, displacing the Social Democratic Party (SPD) from that position for the first time since the founding of the modern German state.

According to the ARD morning magazine’s latest Infratest dimap poll, the AfD has “pushed past the SPD for the first time” and the “governing coalition [between the conservative Christian Social Union, or CSU, and the SPD] has lost further support.”

The poll said that if the Bundestag had to hold an election today, the CSU would poll the lowest it had in more than twenty years and the AfD would emerge as the second largest party in the German parliament.

The poll said that the CSU would take 28 percent of the vote, the SPD 17 percent, and the AfD, 18 percent.

Although this represents a two percent increase for the AfD, the reality remains that the other parties—which include the liberal FDP (9 percent), the crypto-communist Die Linke (10 percent) and the red-alinged “Greens” (15 percent) would still be able to form a coaltion to keep the AfD out of any government.

Despite this, the German constitution however compels whatever ruling government there might be to distribute important parliamentary posts according to party size, which would mean that te AfD would not be completely powerless.

Even more importantly, the AfD would have even greater access to federal funding, as Germany’s constitution pays out large sums of cash to parties based on their support levels—in a supposed attempt to prevent lobbies gaining control of party policies.

This is how the CSU, SPD and others have managed to establish “foundations” to propagate their politics and perpetuate their dominance of the political scene. The AfD has not been slow to utilize this channel to establish their own propaganda outlets, much to the consternation of the ruling elite.

A second place in the Bundestag would increase the state payouts to the AfD even more.
