Hungary sees increasing pressure from pro-migration forces in the EU, Hungarian State Minister for EU Affairs Judit Varga says in an interview.
Varga tells Echo TV, that an interview with Judith Sargentini, the author of a report criticising Hungary’s democracy and migration policy, is a sign that blackmail is used to influence the country’s migration policy.
Sargentini said earlier in an interview that the EU can interfere in a country’s internal affairs and that it is an illusion that member states are sovereign.
“This statement (of Sargentini) clearly shows that the report is political blackmail, aimed at depriving Hungary of its sovereignty and to exert pressure on its migration policy,” Varga says.
According to her the Sargentini report was meant to punish the Hungarian people for refusing to become a migrant country.
“They want us to accept a pro-migration policy but we are having none of it,” Varga adds.
A majority of the European Parliament voted in favour of Sargentini’s report about Hungary and as a result an Article 7 procedure against the country was started.
Though the majority wasn’t the legally required two-thirds of votes cast, they changed the rule for the day to include abstainers to make up that difference.
The procedure could result in Hungary losing its voting rights in the parliament.
