South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) has been forced to delete a Twitter message which called all whites in that country “murderers” and demanded the seizure of all land and minerals by nonwhites.
According to a report in Johannesburg’s Citizen newspaper, the tweet appeared last Thursday on the ANC’s official Parliamentary Twitter account, and read “The biggest mistake we are making is to consult murderers. White people are 9% of the population, they own 79% of land. They never came and consulted us for the land. If they want us to forgive them now, then let us share the land, the mineral resources.”
The tweet was obviously sent out by someone who controls the ANC’s Twitter account, and was not a “re-tweet” or even a quotation, merely a statement of fact.
The tweet was of course noticed by many in South Africa, and it was only after many objections were voiced that the ANC deleted the tweet, and then lied blatantly by claiming that it was a “remark made by a member of the public”—as if a member of the public could make a tweet like that on the ANC’s official feed.
The tweet comes in the wake of renewed reports that the ANC government will start seizing white farms without compensation.
A report in South Africa’s News24 news service revealed that the ANC has “targeted 139 selected farms” for expropriation without compensation in the coming weeks “as it moves to make good on its commitment to test out section 25 of the Constitution.”
Section 25 of the South African constitution states that property may be expropriated only for “a public purpose or in the public interest” and “subject to compensation”—the amount of which, and the time and manner of payment, must either have been agreed to by those affected, or decided by a court.
The latest ANC move will test whether the courts will accept the government’s argument that this does not mean that they have to accept the seller’s demands for market value. If this is successful, then they will not even have to amend the constitution to proceed with the seizure of the white-owned land.
However, the proposed “expropriation bill” will still go ahead and will at the very least, state the exact conditions under which the state can expropriate land without compensation—or, in the case of the court rejecting the test cases, spark off a constitutional amendment.
New South African president Cyril Ramaphosa recently claimed that seizing land from whites would “unlock the wealth of this land” and “add an injection to the growth of our country.”
