French right-wing leader Marine Le Pen faced controversy during her visit to Lebanon when she refused to wear a headscarf for a meeting with Lebanon’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdul-Latif Derian, the country’s most prominent Sunni Muslim cleric. The meeting was subsequently canceled at the last minute.
Le Pen’s refusal to wear a headscarf stirred a response from her, stating, “You can pass on my respects to the Grand Mufti, but I will not cover myself up.” She highlighted her previous meetings, including one with Grand Imam Sheikh al-Azhar in Egypt, where she did not wear a veil.
The controversy unfolded amidst Le Pen’s visit to Lebanon to garner support ahead of the French presidential election. During talks with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, Le Pen expressed her view on French policy regarding Syria. She advocated for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as the “only viable solution” to prevent ISIS from gaining power in the war-torn country.
Notably, Le Pen’s visit to the Middle East occurred while French police were searching the headquarters of her Front National party as part of an investigation into alleged “fake jobs.” Le Pen faces accusations of providing parliamentary assistants with fake jobs funded by EU funds. The investigation, initiated after a preliminary inquiry of over a year, has added another layer of complexity to Le Pen’s already controversial political journey.
Despite these challenges, opinion polls suggest that Marine Le Pen, who advocates for France’s withdrawal from the European Union, is positioned to secure the highest score and potentially win the presidential election in a landslide.

Good for her!! She absolutely did the right thing. Why should she or any woman have to put on a head covering if they are not muslim? These hypocrites should be tolerant of those who don’t subscribe to their religion or beliefs.
