Donald Trump is reportedly being lined up to meet the Queen next year as Government officials work to rebuild the “special relationship” between the US and the UK – and cut out aspiring go-between Nigel Farage.

The Foreign Office is reportedly planning to roll out the red carpet for the Republican juggernaut, who will step into his role as President on January 20.

Securing a state visit with Trump is believed to be the part of a Government scheme to develop close relations with the incoming President, who has already forged a bond with Nigel Farage.

The interim Ukip leader was the first British politician to visit Trump after his election win, and has since put pressure on the Government to make use of his “connections” with the incoming President.

But Whitehall is said to be hoping that by luring Trump to England with a visit to meet the monarch, the Government can form its own independent relationship with the next US leader.

A member of Mr Farage’s team claimed Trump gushed to the Ukip lynchpin about how happy he would be to meet Her Majesty during the pair’s recent meeting in New York.

The source said: “He’s a massive Anglophile. He was really, really keen.

“His late mother, Mary, loved the Queen. He said, ‘I’m going to meet her, too. I can’t wait to come over to England. My mum would be chuffed to bits when I meet the Queen’.”

And it would seem that Government officials have taken note of the President-elect’s enthusiasm.

A Cabinet source said: “The Queen is the key here.”

“She’s not a secret weapon, she’s the biggest public weapon you have.

“Nigel Farage can’t get Trump in front of the Queen.”

A Buckingham Palace spokesman added: “State visits and other meetings with overseas heads of state are organised on the advice of the Government.”
