Austria’s Norbert Hofer is set for another chance at becoming the first nationalist head of state in an EU country after having the previous election results overturned due to large-scale voter fraud. The Austrian Constitutional Court’s investigation revealed that postal ballots were illegally handled in 94 out of 117 districts, leading to a nullification of the previous results.
Earlier this year, Hofer received 51.9% of the initial result, excluding absentee votes, described as a “political earthquake.” However, after counting absentee votes, Alexander Van der Bellen, the former leader of the Greens, secured a 50.3% victory, prompting suspicions of voter fraud. The Freedom Party, led by Heinz-Christian Strache, launched an appeal, presenting evidence of irregularities, including pre-screened invalid ballots and instances of children and foreign citizens voting.
Following a two-week hearing, Gerhard Holzinger, head of the Constitutional Court, announced, “The challenge brought by Freedom Party leader Heinz-Christian Strache against the 22 May election has been upheld.” Consequently, Van der Bellen will step down until the next election, scheduled for September or October.
While the Austrian president’s role is largely symbolic with limited authority, the significance of this election has not been understated, reflecting the ongoing political dynamics and the impact of nationalist sentiments in the country.
