According to reports, European Parliament has adopted a resolution urging the United Kingdom to immediately invoke article 50 of the Lisbon treaty on leaving the EU.
European lawmakers called for the immediate activation of a process in the European Union’s founding law to formalize the United Kingdom’s exit from the EU in a non-binding resolution passed Tuesday.
“The European Parliament… Takes note of the wish of the citizens of the United Kingdom to leave the EU; points out that the will expressed by the people must be entirely and fully respected, starting with the immediate activation of Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU),” the resolution reads.
The amended text passed with 395 votes against 200 and 71 abstentions.
Earlier the European Parliament has drafted a resolution urging the United Kingdom to immediately invoke article 50 of the Lisbon treaty on leaving the European Union.
The parliament “respects the decision of the British people, which should be seen as a challenge to build another Europe” and “calls for Article 50 of the TEU to be invoked immediately,” the draft reads, expected to be adopted at the EP’s Tuesday session.
The United Kingdom held a referendum on whether to leave the EU on June 23. Nearly 52 percent voted in favor of leaving the union.
