Bernie Sanders will not be the Democrat nominee. The deck was stacked against him from the beginning. The Democrat machine with its superdelegates is geared to nominate the politburo selection, and that prearranged selection is the lackluster and corruption-tainted Hillary Clinton.
A Democrat strategist, Douglas Smith, says Sanders “needs to set the tone. If he backs her like Clinton backed Obama in their 2008 race, then it will be more than enough to tip the scales.”
On Sunday, Sanders told Chuck Todd and “Meet the Press” it is the responsibility of the nominee to marshal the troops and attract voters. Sanders said it is the duty of the party to make sure Donald Trump does not make it to the White House.
Large numbers of Sanders supporters, however, have indicated there’s no way they will vote for Clinton. Fox News exit polls in the April 26 primaries showed up to 90 percent of Sanders supporters will not back Hillary.
It’s now up to Sanders to convince them. He is taking baby steps in that direction.
The tide against Clinton may be turning:
The Vermont socialist said it is his job “to make sure that Trump does not become president. And I will do that. But if Secretary Clinton is the nominee, it is her job to reach out to millions of people and make the case as to why she is going to defend working families and the middle [class], provide health care for all people, take on Wall Street, deal aggressively with climate change. That is the candidate’s job to do.”
Clinton, of course, will not “take on Wall Street” because she is a creature of Wall Street and the financial elite. It does not matter if she effectively makes the case for health care, climate change or any of the other social and political pet issues embraced by progressives.
There is but one issue that will drive Democrats after the convention and into the home stretch on the first Tuesday of November.
Mortal fear of Donald Trump.
This will be more than enough to drive the Democrat hordes to vote for Hillary Clinton. Many will not—the few principled Democrats who understand a vote for Clinton is a vote for the warfare state and continued dominance of the financial elite will refuse to vote for Clinton—but many more, hysterical over the thought of a Trump victory, will.
Influential Democrats are beginning the push.
Robert Reich, Bill Clinton’s Secretary of Labor, doled out advice on Saturday: he said “my advice for Sanders supporters: Be prepared to work hard for Hillary Clinton if she gets the nomination.”
Sanders, Reich insists, should stay in the race to the bitter end “because he has attracted a large number of young people and independents. Their passion, excitement, and enthusiasm are critically important to Hillary Clinton’s success, if she’s the nominee, as well the success of other Democrats this year, and, more fundamentally, to the future of American politics.”
The trick is to now blur the distinctions between Clinton and Sanders and dwell on the threat of Trump.
“On policy issues, the divide between Sanders and Clinton is almost infinitesimal, compared to the wide gulf between Clinton and Donald Trump or Ted Cruz,” Jessica Levinson, a law professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, said earlier this month. “Clinton has and must continue to make the case that she is the only viable candidate in the race who has and will address those concerns.”
Finally, Democrats are their own worst enemy. Violent protests, most recently in San Diego, have convinced many Americans that the left side of the Democrat party is populated by hysterical, irrational and thuggish no-nothings who are exercising what, for lack of a better term, can be called “gangsta” politics.
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow admitted the violent demonstrations are counterproductive. “But at some point the organized opposition to Donald Trump is gonna have to come up with a way to try to stop violence at anti-Donald Trump protests to try to channel the legitimate vitriol and upset that he has aroused into non-violent and more constructive demonstrations,” she said.
“The Democratic side is going to start getting blamed for these violent protests and they are going to have to engage constructively somehow to try to stop this stuff from happening.”
It will not stop because Democrats need the Trump fear factor going into the election. It is the only tactic they have and the untutored, politically ignorant and street gangsta element will continue agitating right up until the convention and beyond into the election.
Millions of Americans, fed up with the nonsense, will vote for Donald Trump.
