378835 China Flood

Heavy rains in southwest China have left at least 19 people dead and 20 others missing, forcing thousands of residents to leave their homes, state media report.

The China News Service said on Monday that 12 people have reportedly died in the southwestern major city of Chongqing, three in neighboring Sichuan Province, and four others in Shaanxi Province.

The flooding forced some 160,000 people to flee their homes in Shaanxi Province with another 85,000 in the province of Sichuan.

Army units have been deployed to rescue residents trapped in their flooded homes in the inundated regions.

Heavy rainfall in Sichuan has damaged the agriculture in the province since September 8, leaving 2.5 million people there in a “state of disaster,” local authorities said.

This is while the storms have destroyed 8,200 homes in Sichuan and caused the main rivers in the region to overflow.

China’s meteorological center has forecast heavy downpours are likely to continue until Monday.

The Chinese government has also declared a yellow alert for the Typhoon Kalmaegi, which is packing winds of up to 126 kilometers per hour (78 miles per hour) on its way northwards from the Philippines through the South China Sea.
