379050 Ukraine Donetsk shelling

At least two civilians have been killed and three others wounded in renewed shelling in Ukraine’s restive east, despite a truce between the Kiev government forces and pro-Russians.

Officials in eastern city of Donetsk said the deadly shell fire hit a residential neighborhood north of the city on Wednesday.

According to the Donetsk city council, the two civilians were killed near a market located just a few kilometers away from the city’s airport.

Heavy shelling has been reported almost daily around Donetsk in recent days. On September 15, four people were killed when a car repair shop was hit by an artillery shell in Donetsk. A day earlier, six people were killed and another 15 wounded by artillery shell shrapnel in the northern districts of Donetsk.

The developments come as Kiev and the pro-Russians signed a truce on September 5, after Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko hammered out a compromise deal aimed at ending the heavy fighting.

Ukraine’s mainly Russian-speaking regions in the east have witnessed deadly clashes between pro-Moscow forces and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations to silence pro-Russians in mid-April.

Violence intensified in May after the two flashpoint regions of Donetsk and Lugansk held local referendums in which their residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence from Ukraine.

According to a United Nations human rights official, over 3,000 people, including civilians and Ukrainian troops, have lost their lives in the country’s conflict.
