Russia intends to send a second humanitarian aid convoy to eastern Ukraine in the near future, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says.

“We want to reach an agreement on all conditions for delivering a second convoy by the same route… in the coming days,” Lavrov said at a news conference on Monday.

He added that Moscow sent an official note to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on Sunday explaining the details of the convoy, including the planned contents.

“The humanitarian situation is not improving but deteriorating,” Lavrov said.

He said Moscow is convinced that this agreement needs to be reached “this week”, adding that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and other organizations had warned of the deterioration of humanitarian situation in eastern Ukraine.

Russia sent 230 truckloads of humanitarian supplies including food, water, generators and sleeping bags to Ukraine’s eastern city of Lugansk on Friday.

The aid convoy crossed back over the border on Saturday after delivering humanitarian supplies to civilians in Lugansk. The convoy had been held on the border for several days.

The Ukrainian government has accused Russia of attempting to intervene in eastern Ukraine through aiding pro-Russia forces in the region. Moscow, however, has strongly denied the allegations, saying the aid convoy was to address the plight of hundreds of thousands of people displaced in the region.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday that they were “getting a lot of feedback from the residents of Lugansk, who were thankful for such a good attitude from the Russian part.”

Ukraine’s eastern regions have witnessed deadly clashes between pro-Russia protesters and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations there in mid-April.
