Australia has called on Scotland to remain in the United Kingdom, warning that a breakaway would not be in the best interests of the international community.
In an interview with the Times during a visit to London on Saturday, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said an independent Scotland would be cheered by those he described as enemies of “justice” and “freedom.”
“But as a friend of Britain, as an observer from afar, it’s hard to see how the world would be helped by an independent Scotland,” he added.
The remarks came one month after US President Barack Obama said Washington had a “deep interest” in ensuring that the union stayed intact.
Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, however, has repeatedly stressed that an independent Scotland with a strong economy would benefit the whole Britain.
According to the latest TNS poll, support for a Yes vote in an upcoming referendum on Scotland’s independence stands at 38 percent while 46 percent plan a No vote. This comes as 16 percent of Scots are still undecided over the issue.
Scotland will have an independence day on March 24, 2016, if Scottish people vote to break away from the UK in a referendum, which is slated for September 18, 2014, after more than 300 years of political union with the UK.
